Why Is Solfège Useful to Learn?

Solfège is great for understanding and identifying different notes in music. It helps the learner recognize patterns. Music students who are trained in solfège can hear that interval and know what it is! If you don’t have a name for something, it is less obvious to the brain when that pattern shows up.

Solfège is primarily a tool for facilitating accurate sight singing. Solfège helps you know what each note’s job is. For example, Do is the home base note. Generally speaking, 99% of songs end on Do. It’s the note that makes us feel like the song is done. ✅

Why do we need to know the relationships between notes? (According to Yamaha Music)

"The Yamaha Method uses the "Fixed-Do" solfège in both ear training and piano learning. Fixed-Do allows the learner to connect a certain pitch and syllable, such as middle Do (middle C), with a specific key on the keyboard. This ear training (with Fixed-Do) helps all learners internalize pitch, resulting in a strong relative pitch sense and, in many cases, perfect pitch. Yamaha Music Programs offer JMC (Junior Music Course) classes where students sing solfège by ear and eventually play piano by ear. 🎧

Solfège is the core of the Yamaha Music Method; students absorb this musical vocabulary and use it in both beginning and advanced courses. Solfège becomes each student's first musical voice. In every class, teachers sing melodic patterns and chords that learners follow on.

Part of the Language of Music

Through singing solfège, students begin to acquire and develop a sense of pitch, rhythm, meter, harmony, form, phrase structure, key, articulation, dynamics and mood. To tap into the power of solfège, sing the solfège syllables to the songs they’re working on as part of your daily music practice.

Remember, always have fun and take it slow. This whole learning is a process! 👏🏽 👏🏽 👏🏽 👏🏽 👏🏽
